Realtors Can’t Talk About Crime

This is something that can cause confusion for home buyers when searching for a home with their Realtor.  You are working with someone because of their knowledge of the neighborhood and experience, but they can’t provide what seems like simple information.  Why is this?

The Fair Housing Act was created to protect people from being “steered” to or from a particular neighborhood, city, or home.  Steering is a term used in Real Estate to describe a situation where someone (usually an agent) tries to put you in a particular home  based on something like race.  From the Department of Housing and Urban Development:

“Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 (Fair Housing Act), as amended, prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of dwellings, and in other housing-related transactions, based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status (including children under the age of 18 living with parents or legal custodians, pregnant women, and people securing custody of children under the age of 18), and disability.”

It implicitly means that by saying a neighborhood is unsafe that you are actually saying the people are unsafe.  Also, it could mean, “I think you are a criminal tip and that you belong here.”

That’s the why.  Luckily, we are still able to provide you with information you need to find out and make your decision.  Below are links to maps that we recommend.  Also, you may want to take some time to learn more about Fair Housing Law.  If you feel that your rights have been violated you can make a complaint online.
